It depends on how many windows there are, on how the old one is fitted and on how easy the opening is to reach: a ground floor and a second floor with no lift are not the same job. That is why we write the expected duration on the quote, after seeing the house, and not on the phone before measuring.

What we can tell you in general is how the work is organised: we go one room at a time, the opening stays uncovered only for as long as it takes to remove the old one and put the new one in, and the house stays liveable throughout.

In most replacements, no. If the old frame is well anchored and square, the new window is fitted over it without touching masonry or plaster. It is the quickest route and the one that leaves the fewest traces in the house.

If instead the frame is rotten, out of true or too bulky, it comes out completely and we work inside the opening. There a touch-up of plaster around the perimeter may be needed, but it stays a band of a few centimetres: the wall is not redone and the sill is normally not removed. If yours is a special case we notice it at the site visit, not on fitting day.

Emptying is not needed. It is enough to clear the strip in front of the window and take down whatever is hanging on the nearby walls, curtains included. We take care of the rest with sheets over the furniture and the floor.

Dust is made when the old one comes out, which is why removing and vacuuming happen in the same pass. At the end of the job we take away the old windows and the packaging: they do not sit in the yard waiting for you to call someone.

Yes, and it is also the time when the difference is felt straight away, that same evening. We work one window at a time and the opening is only open for as long as the fitting takes, so the house does not cool down the way people who have never seen a window job imagine.

What really stops the day is driving rain and strong wind, and that mainly concerns outdoor work such as shutters, roller shutters and glazing: sealing onto a wet rebate makes no sense. In that case it is moved, and we tell you the day before.

If you replace the windows keeping the same sizes, the same shape and the same appearance, it is normally ordinary maintenance and falls under permit-free building work: no paperwork to file. That is the case for the vast majority of replacements.

Everything changes if you alter the openings, if you change material or colour in a way visible from the street and above all if the property is in a historic centre, under a conservation order or within a plan that sets rules on facades. There the council's building regulations are what count, and they have to be checked before ordering. At the site visit we tell you whether yours is one of the cases to check.

In everyday use they are the same thing. Strictly speaking a serramento is the element that closes an opening, frame and sash together, while infisso originally meant the part fixed to the wall, that is, the frame. Today, on site and in quotes, the two terms are used interchangeably without confusion.

The distinction that really matters is a different one: external windows and doors, that is, windows, French doors, front doors, shutters and roller shutters, and internal doors, that is, the doors between one room and another. The type of work changes, who does it changes and the tax treatment changes too.

All at once is nearly always better, and before the price it is for a practical reason: site visit, transport, any scaffolding and fitting days are paid for once instead of two or three times. One window fitted today and another in six months weigh more than the same pair fitted in the same visit.

If the budget does not stretch, the sensible order is to start with the rooms you use most and the sides facing north and the wind: that is where you feel the change. At the site visit we can split the quote by room, so you can see for yourself what is worth postponing and what is not.
